Schools should use their PE and sport premium (if needed) to raise attainment in primary school swimming and water safety by funding top-up swimming sessions for those pupils that do not meet National Curriculum (2013) requirements after they’ve completed core swimming lessons.
They are typically delivered via. intensive swimming lessons spread over ten, 30 minute lessons, every day, over two school weeks.
They can help children achieve specific standards, such as the Key Stage 2 (KS2) standard in swimming and water safety.
Top-up swimming can also help children learn with their peers and avoid embarrassment by learning with younger children.
Swim England is the national governing body for swimming in England.

Drowning Prevention Week (DPW) for 2025 is 14th to 21st June 2025
DPW aims to equip everybody across the UK and Ireland with the skills and knowledge to make the right decisions about water safety.
Swim Safe is a free water safety programme created by Swim England and the RNLI in 2013. Swim Safe outdoor swimming and water safety sessions take place every summer and are delivered to school groups at both coastal and inland locations.
Swim Safe is open to children aged 7-14.
To take part, they must be able to swim a minimum of 25m. This is usually achieved around Stage 4 of Swim England’s Learn to Swim Pathway.
Institute of Swimming is the largest provider of Swim England aquatics qualifications.
